“alone we reach our limit, but together we rewrite our destination”

When You Can’t Find the Words

Created by Dorien Harris

Logline: An ego-driven writer who voyages into the underground world of Philadelphia’s creative arts scene in an attempt to overcome his severe case of writers’ block.

This project is a showcase of Philadelphia's vibrant art scene and the benefits of collaboration. This city is a gold mine for young creatives, but opportunities seem limited and competitive. We often think that we need to be independent to achieve success, but it is when we branch out and seek support from others that we truly thrive. This film will raise awareness of the challenges faced by young independent creatives to cultivate community in the places that need it the most, everywhere.

Director’s Statement

Like the protagonist in my film, "When You Can’t Find the Words," I found myself paralyzed by a lack of inspiration, a bad case of writer’s block. But unlike my character, Shaq, I steered away from isolation. Interviewing Philadelphia's vibrant creative community revealed a powerful truth – vulnerability and seeking support are catalysts for growth.

Across all conversations, there was a unifying message: openness and courage to connect fueled creative breakthroughs. This theme, unearthed through the vulnerability of my interviewees, became the heart of the film.  "When You Can’t Find the Words" isn't just about overcoming writer's block; it's a testament to the power of community.

These interviews ignited a passion to showcase more like-minded artists. I plan to actively collaborate with talented Philadelphians like Seriah Nicole, Make Made It, Kendall Tyler, and Azella Gardens, weaving a tapestry of stories that celebrate our city's artistic power.

  • Growing up in Philly myself, I lacked awareness of the city's vibrant creative scene, a reality I don't want for others. That's why I'm excited to connect with Philadelphia's BIPOC students, both by sharing the film "When You Can’t Find the Words" and by partnering with community centers and educational programs to screen it. -Dorien Harris, Director & Writer

Tajanna Mosley, a 24-year-old resident of Philly, discovered her passion for art at a young age. Art served as an outlet for Tajanna, one that could be said to have saved her life. During her childhood struggles with depression, a condition she neither understood nor knew how to manage, Tajanna would resort to self-sabotage as a misguided coping mechanism.

One day, a turning point arrived when someone suggested that Tajanna try drawing out her emotions instead of bottling them up or struggling to articulate them. Taking this advice to heart, Tajanna began to express herself visually whenever she felt upset or overwhelmed. She would grab her sketchbook and draw until she felt a sense of relief. Art became her therapy.

But the power of art in Tajanna's life did not stop there. The deeper she delved into her artistic passion, the more it unlocked a wellspring of creativity within her. Eager to explore new artistic avenues, Tajanna ventured into the realms of photography and videography, and filmmaking discovering a love for these mediums as well. To stay motivated and keep her artistic fire burning, Tajanna surrounded herself with other creative individuals who shared her pursuits.

She craved a community of like-minded people, a place where she could connect with others who reflected her background and interests. This haven she found at C2C (culture2create) played a pivotal role in Tajanna's growth, nurturing both her business and creative sides.

Tajanna's ultimate dream is to own her own studio and travel the world capturing cherished memories for people through her photography and videography skills.
